Social Media has taken over however

Social media protester

Social media has taken over no doubt, and yes as people we need to adapt or perish in today’s modern society, I get that, however how many times do we as people hear of breaking news stories such as the Facebook rapist or The Sunday rapist (www.news24.com), issues such as human trafficking or online fraud, this being only in South Africa what more the entire world, and there aren’t any guesses as to what fuels all of those inhumane activities (www.americanbar.org).
Their biggest influencers are digital media and social media I would say, the positives about these phenomenon’s are obvious, but does that mean we should ignore, by turning a blind eye to issues such as these that they too have destructive consequences in society.
In the post before this I had not listed some of them the con’s as the positives are too much to argue, they include identity theft online as a result of social media, people being falsely represented, in corporate management constantly struggling with a decrease in productivity as a result of again, stalkers who put other people’s lives in danger through social media along with cyber bullying which has led to a lot of young people committing suicide.
Are those not real enough issues to see that maybe social media isn’t all that we think it to be, am I the only one who sees things from this point of view; love social media to death don’t get me wrong.
Merely advocating for the other side, share what your thoughts are too.

  2. i love social media and to tell the truth nothing that doesnt have bad effect, everything that we do have a bad side of it so it is everyone's responsibility to not give personal information about yourself. they always tell us that dont meet up with someone that you meet on facebook, twitter or whatever social media, there is terms and condition on you sign up with any social network. it is our job to protect ourselves, the media or people created it wont.

  3. The arguement in question here is that, and I stand to be corrected that our appreciation for SM makes us neglect issues such as those wouldn't you say, Mase you speak of those problems being the victims fault however if it happened that you fel victim to such yourself would you still feel the same.

  4. I agree with you we tend to turn a blind eye on the cons of social media, im nt a hug fan of social media and i dnt jst communicate with any one especially on fb. we jst need to be carefull.

  5. Most of young adults use social media as form of communicating among themselves, yes it is a fast way to get reach of someone yet people seem to over do by giving out personal information to strangers. I totally agree with you that we ignore the cons of social media and regret later.

  6. finally a person that is seeing things from the same point of view, not saying that SM is bad or should be boycotted just alerting the masses as i am an avid user myself and have formed a dependable relationship with the phenomenon

  7. Social media has played a huge role in today’s society in terms of brand advertising. it is also advisable for companies to adapt with the usage of social media because it is the most powerful tool to communicate with your target publics, easy to persuade and engage with your target publics.

  8. social media has definitely added its con's to society and made the functioning of a persons life that much easier when it comes to interaction with one another. I just believe that the crimes being committed using certain media is more of a immoral person rather than it being because of social media, these people just use it as a different avenue to lure their victims.

  9. As a social network freak, I wuld say that we must not turn a blind eye to rules and regulations. We must play safe

  10. social media can be good a way to connect with people who have similar interests and goals but one has to be careful with what they post because most students are turned down by employers for jobs and interviews because of the inappropriate pictures (nudes)and naughty statements they post on facebook and twitter

  11. I agree with you, but we need to understand that with every good thing that is invented, we as the users need to be responsible for ourselves. A rapist won't just send you an inbox and say; "hey, let's meet, I want to rape you." He (or she) will use tactics to draw you in. We need to learn social media responsibility and know when to say no. Especially us girls, we are so gullible...sithanda izinto

  13. Beautiful opposing points Dimakatso and Mandisa have shared there, social media can cause a lot of unecessary problems for us if used carelessly for I.e not getting that dream job you have been applying for due to nudes you once posted and misrepresenting digital footprint as Katso has put it, and applying common sense to everything you do online as Mandy has put it, if a person says let's meet and their a stranger then ofcourse you shouldn't

  14. Have to agree with Nelly, theres a good and a bad side to social media. We just need to be careful on how we use it and what we give out

  15. In as much as social media serves as a convinient function of interaction it has outrageous disadvantages whereby ritualists use it for human trafficking, people can now create pages to demean others etc which is not fair.

  16. True story, the digital/ social media has taken over, and if we don't adapt to change we will not survive. But with every huge power lies even bigger responsibility. It can make you or beak you. Both in an instant

  17. You're not the only my man. People are just ignorant and only want to stand up when it affects them. I say the contemporary world holistically is a mess.

  18. Social media has certainly taken over man, and now people prefer reading news online over newspapers and TV news, but the question remains, is this the end of Traditional media?

  19. the fact that people can raise their voices anytime and anywhere is the greatest thing about social media.but te still a long way to go for PR industry re

  20. social media is a nice place for socialising and connecting with people.social media has indeed taken over.many of us dobt read newspapers anymore when we can just read online

  21. even though social media has taken over traditional media still plays a major role in our life. remember you can't be forever on social media there is sometime where you've to rely on tv, or to the radio for credible update.

  22. Social media leads to addiction, throughout the day people feel to post something on their pages or check other posts as if it has become an important part of our life. face to face communication has been reduced because of social networks.

  23. you are not the only one, many people do not realise that you lack or lose privacy when you are on social media, that is why people are often victims of these online scams, look no futher, if you were wondering how these people get your details, check out your Facebook profile. Not everyone has luck, but you have to be wise when choosing your friends on social media.

  24. there is none much to be done really, it comes with the era we live in. we just need to be cautious about it and raise awareness of the cons that come bared by social media

    ReplyDelete
  25. We live in tough world where by people are using social media to commit crimes. As individual we need to stay alert because we know that crime has taken over social media.

    ReplyDelete
  26. very tough, and yes not much we can do about it but alert those who are ignorant online

    ReplyDelete
  27. As much as social media can be effective it also is responsile for the death of a whole lot of things. One just wonders if social media is the course of the rise of the society or the death of it

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes I also agree with you guys, social media has its advantages like all the good things out there but the disadvantages tend to be greater than the adv.

I have to agree with you SK it is IGNORANCY indeed
